Montreal lawyer and journalist Dimitri Lascaris joins the Freedom Flotilla from Gothenburg (Sweden) to Olso (Norway), for the final leg of Handala's 2023 itinerary, sailing for the children of Gaza, to end the blockade. Our Freedom Flotilla boat Handala will resume its voyage in 2024, traveling to the Mediterranean to challenge the blockade of Gaza. For those in the St. Catherines (Ontario) area, there is also a FREE public screening on Saturday August 19 at 7 pm, with director Rifat Audeh and Canadian Boat to Gaza / Freedom Flotilla activist David Heap (2011 Flotilla Participant, 2016 & 2018 ground & media crew), at the Performing Arts Centre Film House in St. Catherines. On August 26, 2023, supporters of Palestine in different places around the world will take a dip in the water in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The beach in Gaza is one of few places people can go to to have fun. Each year they have a swimming festival with young kids who have been taught to swim. This year we will join the Gaza Swimming Festival on August 26th, though we will be hundreds and thousands of miles away.
Join in the fun wherever you are – at a beach, on a lake or a river, at a swimming pool – fly a Palestinian flag or wear a keffiyeh if you can, bring your family and friends along! Video streaming and image sharing will bring us together as we #SwimWithGaza. While we challenge the inhumane and illegal sea, land and air blockade of Gaza, we also work against an ongoing media blockade which ignores and misrepresents Palestinian voices, especially those from Gaza. One of our Freedom Flotilla partners in Gaza is a nonprofit organization that showcases and promotes aspiring and inspiring Palestinian writers in Gaza and the diaspora. We Are Not Numbers matches new Palestinian story-tellers with international volunteer mentors who help them polish their stories and prepare them for publication. By helping young Palestinians showcase their stories to the world, We Are Not Numbers illuminates their challenges, hopes, and ambitions.
