SURAH OF THE WEEK
Al-Fath
Surah Al-Fath was revealed to the Prophet (PBUH) after he returned from the area of Al-Hudaybiyyah. In the 6th year of hijrah and the month of Dhul Qa’dah, Muslims travelled to Mecca to perform Umrah but were prevented by idolaters to enter the house of Allah. After negotiations with the idolaters, a peace treaty was signed between the Muslims and them which stated that the Muslims would go back to Madinah without performing Umrah that year and would be allowed to enter Mecca for Umrah the next year. Some companions were not happy with the terms of the treaty including Umar bin Al-Khattab. Later when the caravan of Muslims was headed back to Madinah, Surah Al-Fath was revealed to the Prophet (PBUH) in which this treaty was declared a manifest victory for Muslims.
Narrated by Abdullah bin Mughaffal: “I saw Allah’s Apostle reciting Surah Al-Fath on His she-camel on the day of the conquest of Mecca.” (Bukhari, book 61, number 553)
