Despite
the recent inhumane and illegal brutality by the Israeli Occupation
Forces (IOF) against the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) in international
waters near Crete, the Canadian boat PERSEVERANCE sailed today to break
the siege on Gaza. In the face of increased danger of repression, our
campaign needs your attention and all the support we can get.
| | | Just
a few days ago, 600 nautical miles (more than 1100 km) away from
Israel, the IOF attacked the GSF in international waters near Greece.
Armed Israeli commandos seized 22 boats and over 178 participants were
illegally abducted. Participants were tortured, beaten - and detained
for two days on an Israeli warship. 34 have now been transported to
hospitals in Greece. There are reports of bloody clothes, broken bones,
and people knocked unconscious. Thiago Avila and Saif Abukeshek are
still illegally detained and have been taken illegally to Israel. Spain
and Brazil have spoken out strongly against this 'flagrantly illegal action by the Israeli authorities outside their jurisdiction’ — Canada should join them in doing the same, and move quickly to sanction Israel.
Israel is once again violating international law.
Two of those from the GSF who were detained and then released in Crete
are Canadians - Marie Tota and Umir Tiar. Others remain at risk. And
though its own citizens were put into violent danger at the hands of the
IOF, the Canadian government has remained absolutely silent. | | | This is why we have to choose to continue to sail, together with our partners from Free Gaza Australia, as part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s
Flotilla2026 mission. In the face of escalating violence we need to
continue our resistance, and we have to continue to force our
governments to end their complicity in the continued genocide of
Palestinian people. As Ehab Lotayef, who left Sicily today, bound for Gaza onboard PERSEVERANCE, puts it: “The best way to deal with a bully is to stand up to them nonviolently.”
What’s
happening with the GSF showcases to the world how the state of Israel
is willing to break international law and inflict violence - even in the
spotlight. Imagine what they are inflicting on Palestinians behind
closed doors. We’ve now watched this genocide live streamed on our
phones for almost three years. What will it take to break the siege?
If
the Canadian government refuses to stand up against genocide and
refuses to stand up for its own citizens, we have to continue to apply
pressure. When governments fail, we sail.
We call on the international community, civil society, and the media to
demand accountability for the attacks on the Global Sumud Flotilla. We
call on all governments to guarantee safe passage for our vessel and
others sailing to Gaza and to uphold the basic principles of
humanitarian law. Along with modest amounts of aid, our boat PERSEVERANCE
carries our solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and our cargo of hope.
We persevere in sailing because we have the experience and moral
responsibility to use it now. And we need all eyes on deck. With
increased risks, we face increased financial strain, for example to keep
bringing you the livestream where you can watch the FFC boats.
Please, give what you can to support us so we can stand in solidarity
with the people of Palestine and continue to force our governments to
respond.
