Decolonizing our minds is a daily practice, one that is extremely important on days like today. Thanksgiving is a colonial holiday that celebrates the wealth and abundance that stems from settler colonialism. While many of us have separated our practices from this colonial celebration, the Canadian state continues to act in bad faith regarding treaties and continues to extract wealth from stolen Indigenous lands. Reconciliation isn’t an orange shirt or a land acknowledgment, reconciliation is dismantling the systems that continue the colonial process in these lands and beyond. The practice of giving thanks is not in itself colonial, but part of decolonizing our minds is noticing the ways that Indigenous practices have been appropriated, repackaged, and sold back to us. Notice the narrative that is sold with it and who that narrative serves. The myth that settlers came to these lands and everything was handed over without conflict serves to romanticize the violent process of colonization.
We see the legacy of these colonial narratives as they continue to be used to dispossess Palestinians of their land. As we challenge colonial narratives everywhere, we stand committed to liberation from Turtle Island to Palestine.
